Pakistan, which has been witnessing a mobile phone boom in recent years, is now the second-largest mobile handset market in the world. China, meanwhile, continues to be the world's largest cellphone market. The total number of mobile subscribers in India has hit a high of 771.18 million. More than 200 mobile handset brands are available at outlets across the country.
But, do these outlets have these: the world's most expensive mobile phones?

9. GOLD EDITION NOKIA 8800: $2,700




Gold Edition Nokia 8800 has 62,000 colour TFT (208 x 208) display screen along with a SVGA 5 MP camera. MMS, SMS, USB, Java, WAP, Infrared, Bluetooth and Edge connectivity are present.
Other standard features such as FM Radio, Mp3 Player, 64 polyphonic and Video Recording are also there.
But what will capture everyone's attention is its gold casing.

8. MOTOROLA V220 SPECIAL EDITION: $51,800


It has all the standard features except that this mobile phone is studded with 1,200 diamonds on the front panel as well as 18 carat gold is laid in the keyboard.
This mobile phone has been created by Peter Aloisson, an Austrian designer.

Vertu diamond mobile phone has tiny diamond dotted all over the body and the keypad, which has eight carat of diamond.

The body of this mobile phone is made from titan and polycarbonate and spots a cutting-edge mirror that is adorned with diamonds. It's designed by Jaren Goh.
The mobile phone uses Intel 400 Mhz processor, 4 mega pixel with 256 TFT screen.

4. VERTU SIGNATURE COBRA: $310,000


Vertu Cobra is a limited edition mobile phone, with just eight created so far.
The mobile phone has nine carat round diamond, two carat pear cut diamond, two emerald eyes and 439 rubies that are used to give a cobra look to the phone.
In total, this mobile phone has 21 carats of diamond and rubies.
French jeweller, Boucheron, has created this phone.

3. DIAMOND CRYPTO SMARTPHONE: $1.3 MILLION


Diamond Crypto is encased with a platinum base and has 50 diamonds, 8 of which are rare blue diamonds.
The navigation key and the Ancort logo are of 18 carat rose gold. This mobile phone was built on Windows CE and has been produced by JSC Ancort.

. GOLDVISH LE MILLION: $1.3 MILLION


Goldvish LeMillion uses a VVS1 (only microscopically flawed) diamonds with 18 carat of white gold.
The features are pretty standard with 2 GB storage, FM radio, digital camera, MP3 playback and bluetooth.
Emmanuel Gueit is the designer. Goldvish LeMillion is available only on order.

iPhone 3GS Supreme is also decorated in a chest carved from granite and Kashmir gold along with a lining made from top Nubuck grain leather.

Then: In 1983, Motorola's DynaTAC (Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage) 8000X was the world's first commercially-released mobile phone, with a price tag of $3995 equivalent to $8,772.59 in today's dollars. Motorola spent 15 years and over $100 million developing the technology. The DynaTAC 8000X allowed 30 minutes of talk time, took 10 hours to charge, weighed 1.75 lb., and stood 13 in. high

Now: The DynaTAC has long been forgotten, with pocket-size touch phones like the Blackberry Torch, Droid X, and iPhone 4 dominating the market.
TVs





Then: The television was first introduced to the American public at the 1939 World's Fair. The outbreak of World War II delayed commercial network programming in the U.S. until the late 1940's. A popular black-and-white model, the 1948 Admiral Model 9A111, had a 7 inch screen encased in a large metal box four times the screen size. The 1948 Admiral Model 9A111 cost $2,495 ($22,642.49 in today's money!)

Then: Nolan Bushnell founded Atari in 1972, but it didn't become big in homes until 1975 — when Atari started selling home versions of Pong, a two-dimensional sports game which (sort of) simulated a game of table tennis. Pong helped Atari become a household name and introduced very basic, at-home video games to the masses.

Now: Play Halo with friends in different countries, watch an HD movie on Blu-ray, play tennis, lose weight — all through your PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii or XBOX.




Then: The first floppy disks were invented by IBM to store data and programs. Floppy disks came in 8 inch, 5 1/4 inch and 3 1/2 inch forms and were used for data storage from the mid-1970's to the late 1990's. The floppies held anywhere from 1.44 MB to 6MB worth of data.

Now: A micro SD drive that hold gigs of data can fit conveniently on a keychain.

Computers





Then: One of the earliest computers was ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), the first true all-purpose electronic computer. Unveiled in 1946, it was a monstrous 30-ton machine with 6000 switches, 18,000 tubes and cabinets, and occupied an entire room.

Now: Take your pick — super slim laptops, ultra light Netbooks, iPads and soon-to-come Android tablets.

Then: In 1956, Ray Dolby, Charles Ginsberg, and Charles Anderson invented a video camera that was the first machine to record both image and sound. The machines sold for $75,000 a piece and only sold to large TV networks until the 80's. The first commercial color video camera to utilize a completely solid-state image sensor called a charge-coupled-device (CCD) was developed by Sony in 1980.

Now: Make homemade movies with an HD Flip Video camera or hand-held Panasonic camcorder that can easily fit in any pant pocket.
Audio Listening Devices




Then: Though Steve Jobs' iPods are the most popular MP3 players around, the person most well known for bringing MP3 players to the mainstream is Nathan Schulhof. Schulhof is often referred to as the "father of the MP3 player industry" with the Audio Highway player. Audio Highway was the first company to announce a portable MP3 player that let users download content. Audio Highway won an innovations award for the Listen Up player at the CES show in January 1997. Of course the first portable audio listening device to go mainstream was the Sony Walkman TPS-L2. The portable stereo system was first introduced in Japan in 1979 and created a whole new category of personal, mobile music.

Now: iPods now have most of the market share for personal MP3 players. Players like the SanDisk Sansa and Microsoft Zune offer buyers a cheaper alternative to their Apple competitors.

Cameras




Then: Alexander Wolcott invented the first camera, a design he patented in 1840. However, George Eastman brought photography and cameras to the general public around 1885. Eastman called his first camera the 'Kodak.' The 'Kodak' was a box camera with a fixed lens and single shutter speed. The 'Kodak' had enough film for a hundred exposures and had to be sent back to the factory for processing.

Then: In 1907, William Henry Hoover produced the first commercial bag-on-a-stick upright vacuum cleaner in Ohio, USA. Hoover redesigned the machine with a steel casing, casters, and attachments, and the rest was cleaning history.

Typewriters





Then: The Blicksenderfer Manufacturing Company produced the first electric typewriter in 1902. Typewriters didn't reach mass market until much later — when IBM released the Electric Typewriter Model 01 in 1935. Generation X learned to type on a variation of this model until desktop computers made them virtually extinct.

10.Great Pacific Garbage Patch – Pacific The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also described as the Pacific Trash Vortex, is a gyre of marine litter in the central North Pacific Ocean. Most current estimates state that it is larger than the U.S. state of Texas, with some estimates claiming that it is larger than the continental United States, however the exact size is not known for sure.

9. Izu Islands – Japan

The Izu Islands are a group of volcanic islands stretching south and east from the Izu Peninsula of Honshū, Japan. Administratively, they form two towns and six villages; all part of Tokyo. The largest is Izu Ōshima, usually called simply Ōshima. Because of their volcanic nature, the islands are constantly filled with the stench of sulfur (extremely similar to the smell of thousands of farts). Residents were evacuated from the islands in 1953 and 2000 due to volcanic activity and dangerously high levels of gas. The people returned in 2005 but are now required to carry gas masks with them at all times in case gas levels rise unexpectedly.

8.The Door to Hell – Turkmenistan

This has featured on listverse before, but it would be remiss of us to exclude it from this list. While drilling in Derweze in Turkmenistan in 1971, geologists accidentally found an underground cavern filled with natural gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of about 50-100 meters. To avoid poisonous gas discharge, scientists decided to set fire to the hole. Geologists had hoped the fire would go out in a few days but it has been burning ever since. Locals have named the cavern The Door to Hell. As you can see from the picture above, it is one hell of an amazing place, but certainly one you wouldn’t want to visit.

7.Alnwick Poison Gardens- England

Inspired by the Botanical Gardens in Padua, Italy (the first botanical garden which was created to grow medicinal and poisonous plants in the 1500s), the Alnwick Poison Garden is a garden devoted entirely to plants that can kill. It features many plants grown unwittingly in back gardens, and those that grow in the British countryside, as well as many more unusual varieties. Flame-shaped beds contain belladonna, tobacco and mandrake. The Alnwick Garden has a Home Office license to grow some very special plants; namely, cannabis and coca which are found behind bars in giant cages – for obvious reasons.

6.Asbestos Mine – Canada

Asbestos is a set of six naturally occurring silicate minerals highly prized for their resistance to fire and sound absorption abilities. On the downside, exposure to this stuff causes cancer and a variety of other diseases. It is so dangerous that the European Union has banned all mining and use of asbestos in Europe. But, for those curious enough to want to get close to the stuff, all is not lost. In Canada at the Thetford Mines, you can visit an enormous open pit asbestos mine which is still fully operational. The workers in the mines aren’t required to wear any sort of respiratory protection, and in some sections of the nearby town, residential areas are butted right next up against piles of asbestos waste. The mine offers bus tours of the deadly environment during the summer months. Tickets are free (would you expect it to be any other way?). If you decide to visit, don’t forget your full body bio-hazard suit.


5.Ramree Island – Burma

Ramree Island in Burma is a huge swamp home to 1000s of salt water enormous salt water crocodiles, the deadliest in the world. It is also home to malaria carrying mosquitos, and venomous scorpions. During the Second World War, the island was the site of a six week battle in the Burma campaign. Here is a description of one of those horrifying nights: “That night [of the 19 February 1945] was the most horrible that any member of the M.L. [motor launch] crews ever experienced. The scattered rifle shots in the pitch black swamp punctured by the screams of wounded men crushed in the jaws of huge reptiles, and the blurred worrying sound of spinning crocodiles made a cacophony of hell that has rarely been duplicated on earth. At dawn the vultures arrived to clean up what the crocodiles had left…Of about 1,000 Japanese soldiers that entered the swamps of Ramree, only about 20 were found alive.”

4.Yungas Road – Bolivia

The North Yungas Road (Road of Death or Death Road) is a 61 kilometres (38 mi) or 69 kilometres (43 mi) road leading from La Paz to Coroico, 56 kilometres (35 mi) northeast of La Paz in the Yungas region of Bolivia. It is legendary for its extreme danger with estimates stating that 200 to 300 travelers are killed yearly along it. The road includes crosses marking many of the spots where vehicles have fallen. The road was built in the 1930s during the Chaco War by Paraguayan prisoners. It is one of the few routes that connects the Amazon rainforest region of northern Bolivia, or Yungas, to its capital city. Because of the extreme dropoffs of at least 600 metres (2,000 ft), single-lane width – most of the road no wider than 3.2 metres (10 ft) and lack of guard rails, the road is extremely dangerous. Further still, rain, fog and dust can make visibility precarious. In many places the road surface is muddy, and can loosen rocks from the road.

3.Mud Volcanoes of Azerbaijan – Azerbaijan

In the Spring of 2001, volcanic activity under the Caspian Sea off the Azeri coast created a whole new island. In October 2001 there was an impressive volcanic eruption in Azerbaijan at Lokbatan, but there were no casualties or evacuation warnings. But Azerbaijan does not have a single active volcano, at least not in the usual sense of the word. What Azerbaijan does have is mud volcanoes – hundreds of them. Mud volcanoes are the little-known relatives of the more common magmatic variety. They do erupt occasionally with spectacular results, but are generally not considered to be dangerous – unless you happen to be there at the wrong time: every twenty years or so, a mud volcano explodes with great force, shooting flames hundreds of meters into the sky, and depositing tonnes of mud on the surrounding area.

2. The Zone of Alienation – Eastern Europe

The Zone of Alienation is the 30 km/19 mi exclusion zone around the site of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster and is administrated by a special administration under the Ukrainian Ministry of Extraordinary Situations (Emergencies). Thousands of residents refused to be evacuated from the zone or illegally returned there later. Over the decades this primarily elderly population has dwindled, falling below 400 in 2009. Approximately half of these resettlers live in the town of Chernobyl; others are spread in villages across the zone. After recurrent attempts at expulsion, the authorities became reconciled to their presence and even allowed limited supporting services for them. Because of looting, there is a strong police presence – so be warned, if you visit, you may either be shot or get radiation poisoning – and we all know how awful that can be.

1.Ilha de Queimada Grande – Brazil

Off the shore of Brazil, almost due south of the heart of São Paulo, is a Ilha de Queimada Grande (Snake Island). The island is untouched by human developers, and for very good reason. Researchers estimate that on the island live between one and five snakes per square meter. That figure might not be so terrible if the snakes were, say, 2 inches long and nonvenomous. The snakes on Queimada Grande, however, are a unique species of pit viper, the golden lancehead. The lancehead genus of snakes is responsible for 90% of Brazilian snakebite-related fatalities. The golden lanceheads that occupy Snake Island grow to well over half a meter long, and they possess a powerful fast-acting poison that melts the flesh around their bites. This place is so dangerous that a permit is required to visit.
