Best iPhone Apps 2011!

Filling up your new iPhone? Just hoping to make the one you already have even better? These are the apps you don't want to be without.

Angry Birds

Dangerously addictive but deceptively simple, Angry Birds lets you employ cartoon birds as weaponized projectiles in an escalating war against a posse of egg-stealing green pigs. (Don't ask.) Revenge relies on vectors and basic principles of physics, but the gist is to use a slingshot to angle an 'angry bird' at the smug little pigs. The real challenge? Putting your phone down once you've started.
Scrabble

Hasbro's iPhone app version of Scrabble might be even better than Grandpa's board version. You can match wits against the computer, against online opponents, or against your friends via Facebook. Scrabble pros can have up to 50 games going at once, while newbies will appreciate the game's learning tools, including a teacher mode and a cheater option, which allows the computer to choose the highest-score word for you.
Plants v. Zombies

The thought of a zombie attack is enough to keep any sensible person up at night. But you know what's even scarier? Watching waves of zombies trampling your nicely manicured lawn. That national (or at least gardener's) nightmare is realized in Plants vs. Zombies, a perennial best-seller. Game rules? The zombies advance, you bombard them with any number of flora, including ears of corn and frozen watermelons. That's just common sense, right?
Doodle Jump

One of the top-grossing apps of all time, Doodle Jump remains as compelling as ever. Tilt your phone to guide the adorably-long-snouted Doodler as he climbs a piece of graph paper, all the while dodging black holes, shooting monsters, and picking up goodies. Between the game's range of colorful winter, jungle, space and graveyard themes and its lack of a finish line, Doodle Jump is tough to quit.
Fruit Ninja

Who knew that a Ninja's worst enemy could be fruit? Apparently, Halfbrick Studio, the developer of this popular game. Just swipe your finger to cleave flying fruit in two, ideally before they hit the ground. Oh, and keep a watch out for bombs; mistakenly slice one, and it's game over. The app is integrated with OpenFeint (so you can compete with your friends), and it's an ideal app for commuters or for those stuck in a slow-moving grocery store line.
Cut the Rope

Angry Birds dominated the App Store in 2010, but Cut the Rope — an equally addictive puzzle-like game — gave it a run for its money at the end of the year. Featuring Om Nom — a wee green creature with none of the rage of the Angry Birds but all of the aww! factor — Cut the Rope requires players to maneuver a piece of hard candy through a maze of obstacles and rope-cutting, and into the open mouth of an eager Om Nom.

Pictureka

It's either Where's Waldo? for the iPhone generation, or hell for anyone who has ever lost their keys in a messy room. Pictureka presents gamers with a screen cluttered with objects, and a list of things they must find (think five pieces of fruit, or six objects from space). Find them all before the clock runs out and get rewarded with. . . a new list. Trust us, it's more addictive than it sounds.
Wurdle

With Wurdle, users spot then trace words from a grid of letters, acrostic-style, to see how many words they can make in a two-, three- or five-minute period. Stuck? Shake the phone to scramble the tiles, then get back to word hunting. At game's end the app will helpfully shame you with a list of all the words you missed, and also let you compare scores with friends or with other players online.
GeoDefense Swarm

The principle is simple: Stop the creatures by blasting them with strategically-placed cannons before they reach your base. When it comes to the gameplay itself, things can quickly — but entertainingly — spiral out of control. (Before you know it, the casualty count will include your phone battery.) GeoDefense Swarm is easy enough for a child to play, but mastering it takes a nimble mind and even nimbler fingers.
Kayak

Kayak, the popular meta-search website, has created an app that makes it easy to search for hotels, flights and car rentals even while you're away from your desk. Budding road warriors will appreciate the airport information section, price alerts and fee table, while bean counters will appreciate that the app comes in a free, regular version. High flyers wanting to book first- or business-class tickets will need the Pro version, however, priced at $1.99.

Your iPhone Knows Where You've Been; Others Can, Too

Your iPhone knows where you've been. That hitherto-unknown feature of the popular smartphone came to light this week as security researchers announced the discovery of a secret file on the device that stores the information.
That data includes the latitude and longitude coordinates of the phone, accompanied by a time stamp. This tracking mechanism, reported at the Where 2.0 conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, apparently began with iOS 4.
Mapping the Data
Pete Warden, one of the researchers presenting the finding, told news media that Apple "has made it possible for almost anybody" who could get access to your smartphone or computer to find out where you've been. The location/time stamp file is copied onto a computer when the smartphone is synchronized with iTunes.
The researchers said locations are apparently not found through GPS, but through triangulation against the nearest cell-phone towers. This is less accurate than GPS, but consumes less power. Some observers have suggested that the log also uses Wi-Fi location data.
The researchers investigated whether such a tracking and recording function was similarly present in Android phones, but reported they couldn't find any such ability in phones for that platform.
Warden and fellow researcher Alasdair Allan created an open-source application that maps the location information from the iPhone file, allowing a user to visually follow his or her movements over a period of time. They said the app doesn't communicate this data to anyone.
The application is available at http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/. At that location, the researchers provide the steps for a user to view the information in the file, which they said is located on a computer in a folder inside /Users/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backups/.
They noted that, if users choose to encrypt backups, others will be prevented from viewing the data on the computer.
'Data-Gathering Isn't Accidental'
Warden and Allan said it's "unclear" why Apple is collecting this information, although they speculated the company may have new features in development that could utilize a history of the user's locations. They added that the duplication of the file across devices "is evidence the data-gathering isn't accidental," and there's currently no evidence the data is stored or transmitted elsewhere.
The said the problems with this data collection are that it's stored in an easily readable form, and that Apple is collecting the information at all. They noted that similar data is collected by cell-phone providers as operational data, but "it's kept behind a firewall" and requires a court order to be seen.
By making this file easily available, the researchers pointed out, Apple is making it easy for, say, an investigator or a jealous spouse to obtain your location history. Interestingly, Apple touted location privacy during iOS 4's launch last year, including a requirement that location-aware apps obtain user permission before obtaining location data.

Get “Bizzy” – Real Time Reviews and Suggestions

Bizzy, the personalized local business recommendation engine powered by people with similar tastes, launched a new mobile location-based “Check Out” feature, which lets you quickly and easily denote your response to every business you visit. Then the sentiment that you have shared about the business that you visited will let others know what you thought about the place and it will help Bizzy give YOU recommendations for the next time you’re out and about.
“Bizzy’s new ‘Check Out’ is very different than other location apps that focus on WHERE you went. Bizzy’s focus is on how you liked where you went,” says Aaron Strout, author of the upcoming book “Location-Based Services for Dummies.” “I’ll keep checking in with Foursquare or Gowalla when I go out, but I’m also going to ‘Check Out’ with Bizzy to keep a record of my favorite places, let my friends know how it went, and help Bizzy learn more about my tastes.”
“We’ve designed ‘Check Outs’ to let users share their opinion of a place in the same amount of time it takes to sign a credit card slip or wait for your date to get back from the bathroom. You don’t have to wait to get home to write up a review anymore.”
To “Check Out” from a business, you just tap on the “Check Out” button on the Bizzy mobile app and then tell Bizzy how you liked the place by using the smiley face scale: the “happy face :) ,” the “meh face :| ,” or the “sad face :( .” you can also leave a tip with your “Check Out,” letting future visitors know a little something extra about the location, or food, or other special insider information including some pictures if you’d like.
So download the Bizzy mobile app for iPhone or Android smartphones and start “checking out” then you can let Bizzy recommend the best places for you to eat, shop and play. Did I mention it’s free? but right now it’s only here in the U.S.A.

iPhone Clock Breaks Again with DST Switch

Each time the clocks change in preparation for the summer, it seems that iOS devices have problems with making the change. Last time, alarms broke and this time it seems the clocks are switching an hour in the wrong direction.
This time each year, clocks move forwards an hour in the US (followed by the UK and other places shortly after). A quick search on Twitter reveals that this wasn’t the case though for a number of iPhone users who have essentially posted on twitter wondering why they woke up a couple of hours later than expected.
With the change putting the clocks backwards an hour, it actually ended up putting time 2 hours out as when it was 11am, iPhone users will have seen 9am on their clock.
It isn’t clear why Apple can’t get the clock correct and right now, it also isn’t clear if this one was a fault of the iPhone or perhaps a problem with networks pushing out the wrong time for those who have the iPhone set the clock automatically.
For those who expect clocks to change soon, it might be worth using a different alarm clock that day just to ensure you wake up at the right time. For a lot of people, it doesn’t particularly matter but for others it could mean missing a flight or another important event.

Chitika Hints at Verizon iPhone 4 Having 10 Percent Share

The Chitika ad network has posted details hinting that the Verizon iPhone 4 now has about a 10 percent share in the US. Numbers fluctuate daily and go somewhere between the 9 to 12 percent range.
Chitika displays ads across a number of websites around the world and because of this, it’s in a position to grab this kind of data quite effectively.
From what we are told, the numbers are on a 24 hour rolling average and updated each hour. Also, the company only tracks cellular connections rather than WiFi so that it can give more accurate figures.
Although the numbers might not be exactly precise, they will still give a good indication as to how much share of the iPhone 4 market Verizon has when compared to AT&T.

Sadly, The iPhone 5 Pictures Floating Around Are Fake

Throughout the course of this morning, we’ve seen these images — purportedly showing off the iPhone 5 (tiny bezel and redesigned antenna and all) — hit a number of blogs. It showed up in our tips box a few times, as well.
Something about the shots just didn’t ring right, so I got to sleuthin’. First step: find the original source. After a few minutes of navigating the Googletubes, I ended up here — a Vietnamese forum that appears to be the first appearance of the shots. Alas, there was no new information. Hmph.
Next approach: translate the watermark. The fact that the Chinese characters were on an image made things a bit tough (can’t just throw an image like this into Google Translate, you know?), but eventually this character drawing/translation tool saved the day. Literally, the watermark translates to “Four Month Fish”. Less literally, it translates to “April Fish” — which, as it just so happens, is the english translation of the French name for April Fool’s day, “poisson d’avril”.

Render: an illusion for iPhone

Sean Scott is a professional magician who also designs and sells illusions to others. His latest creation is called “Render,” and it makes use of smartphones that can take pictures and video. While he doesn’t (of course) reveal how the trick works (you have to buy it from him directly), in the demo video an iPhone appears to capture objects using its camera, turn them into 3D objects on the touchscreen, and even take virtual items (like a video of an origami crane) and turn them into real objects that the magician can pull out of the screen.
Render does not appear to be an app in the traditional sense, so don’t look to be buying this in the App Store any time soon, and my guess is that it combines digital effects with old fashioned slight of hand. Regardless, it’s an impressive visual. The product description says the DVD that tells you how to perform the illusion comes with a “special device” for your phone, and that it works “with hand held devices capable of viewing/taking photos videos or applications.”

The New Shape of the iPhone 5

Apple-iphone5-New-Shape
Apple has come up with all new look for iphone 5 and it is expected that its design would blow away everyone’s thinking. This new design of iphone 5 would be stunning enough to captivate everyone’s eyes. There are many factors that will describe all new look for iphone 5 and it is expected that this kind of change will take technical world in to different level. It would be completely different from all other models that are available today. Let us see some of the basic changes that would be made in this iphone 5 from Apple.
New shape and design features
This new form and shape of iphone 5 would be a different form factor with all new and exciting look. The external design would be completely redesigned and many of the designers have started imaging how the new iphone fifth generation would be like. It would be truly something like out of box thing that will take everyone away with just the first look. Iphone 5 would be a game changer that would bring world in to its own strives. Although it is being expected that the exterior design may not change much and its materials are same but it would opt out a saying” if it is not broken, aint fix it”. It is expected that this new iphone 5 would be touch screen with larger screen. In fact, it would be much like android large screen. It would have vanishing edge screen. It would not have any plastic or bezel covering outside it. Apple is trying that it would evolve both ipad and iphone derived in one single iphone 5. Hence, its design would be enthralling to look out for. It would be mobile like phone with ipad like design functionality. Surely, this is going to be a great experience to watch this new design. It would be surely larger than the current iphone and it would give a look of elegance and executive form.
iPhone 5 release
Not much is been known for the release of iphone 5. However, with the things that went wrong in iphone 4, it has been speculated that market would see the fifth generation iphone soon. However, it requires lot many things to handle in it. Not only features, but also the look has to be made something that customers are keen in buying this new release. This new iphone 5 would be more screen oriented phone that will help to ease everything else.
Iphone 5 will stay stylish
With great designers being involved, it is expected that iphone 5 would always be stylish and iconic in itself. It will give complete feel and look of mobile phone in your hand and you feel the VIP persona when you handle the phone. Construction and design would be great with the fifth generation iphone that is going to get in to market soon. It will be away from all kind of issues that were there in iphone 4 and will get in to more feature side to be customer friendly.

iPhone4 tips and trick

. Scroll to topTapping the status bar (the bar at the top with the clock) will make scrollable content scroll to the top. It comes in handy in situations like when you’ve scrolled down a long web page or mail message and you quickly need to get back to the top.

This may be the most convenient, yet hidden feature on the iPhone. I had my phone for months before stumbling upon it (and I didn’t even stumble upon it by playing around with the phone, but by reading the programming documentation on scroll views).
As far as I know, there’s no corresponding way to scroll to the bottom, though

2. ScreenshotsSimultaneously press the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons to take a screenshot of your current screen. You’ll hear a camera shutter sound, your screen will flash white, then the screenshot will appear in the “Saved Photos” library of the Photos app.

3. Saving images in Safari and Mail

Touching an image in Safari or Mail for a couple of seconds will present you with an action sheet which will enable you to save the image. As with taking screenshots, the image will get stored in the “Saved Photos” library of the Photos app.

4. Caps lock

Double-tap the Shift key to lock it.
This one’s actually somewhat intuitive but I was surprised by how many people aren’t aware of it.

Note: For this to work, you need to make sure Enable Caps Lock is turned on in the Keyboard section of General settings.

Along somewhat similar lines, a handy way of saving a tap when you need to type a capital letter is to touch the Shift key then slide over to the desired key. This behavior also works for the Number key.

5. Extra keys

Do you need to type an umlauted-u (ü) but you’re not using the German keyboard? Touch and hold the U key and you get a set of additional keys to choose from.
This works for several of the alphabetic keys, enabling you access to letters such as éîçåß, etc.

In addition, there are several punctuation keys that behave similarly, so that you can type curly-quotes, etc.

And furthermore, when the keyboard is in “URL-mode”, where the “.com” key is available, touching and holding it pops-up additional options for quickly entering .net, .edu, and .org domains.
__________________6. Lock / shut down / force quit / resetYou’d be surprised to know how many people don’t know how to turn their phone completely off. I’m not talking about “locking” the phone where you simply press the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your phone.
For a while, I was under the false impression that locking the phone was equivalent to putting your Mac to sleep. But when your phone is locked, the screen turns off but the app that’s running at the time continues to run. For instance a relaxation app is able to continue playing sound but save battery power with the screen off. So, locking your phone is actually more like “display sleep” on your Mac (⌃⇧⏏ or Control-Shift-Eject for those of you who can’t read Macroglyphics).
So to ensure that your phone is using as little battery as possible, you’re best off always pressing the Home button before locking so that no app remains running.
Note: Most apps do nothing while the phone is locked but I’ve seen too many apps where this isn’t the case, so I say “better safe than sorry” and usually quit before locking.
To turn your phone completely off, press the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds then drag the red slider that appears.

When should you turn your phone completely off? The two situation that I usually do this is when I’m almost out of battery and when my phone is acting kind of wonky.
If your battery’s almost dead and you’re nowhere near some way of charging it your best bet is to turn it off if you’re going to need it to make a call or check something on the ‘net (assuming you can forego and incoming calls/SMSs).
And if your phone’s been acting flaky, where apps are starting to get really slow or behave unexpectedly, turning your phone off then back on usually gets things back to normal.
Have you ever been using an app and it’s become very unresponsive or completely frozen? You can force quit it by pressing the Home button for at least six seconds.

And finally, if your phone seems to be completely frozen where attempting to turn it off or force quit the current app does nothing, you can force a reset of your phone by pressing both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds. Note that while Apple technically calls this a “reset”, it’s actually more like a “reboot” and none of your settings will be changed.

7. Home button options

A very underused, yet convenient feature is that you’re able to set the function for double-clicking the Home button. By default, this just brings you to the Home screen, meaning no different function than clicking the Home button once.
But if you go to the Settings app then navigate to General then Home Button, you’ll find a few handy options. I have mine set to go to my Phone Favorites but you can also set it to open the iPod app, or just show the iPod controls when music is playing.
And something I recently noticed after updgrading to the newest iPhone OS is that when you now click the Home button while already on the Home screen, it’ll quickly take you to the first page of apps. This is a great feature if you have your phone filled with apps… and who doesn’t these days? 8. Swipe to deleteIn the Mail app and many others that use lists of items, you’re able to quickly delete an item by swiping your finger across the item… sort of emulating crossing something off a list. Doing so exposes a Delete button so that you’re able to confirm your action.

Verbatim Wireless Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard for iPad and iPhone

The iPhone and iPad are pretty darn fine devices in their own right, otherwise how else are you able to explain the phenomenal sales figures of both, alongside frenzied lines that form with the release of each device, what more the iPad 2? This just goes to show how popular Apple products are throughout the world, and that is certainly an opportunity for other third party accessory manufacturers to churn out accessories to go with your iOS-powered devices.
Verbatim, being a name that is more often than not associated with storage devices, are now back with their wireless bluetooth mobile keyboard for both ipad and iphone. Makes perfect sense, and chances are business oriented folks will be picking this up since they would most probably find it to be rather challenging to churn out a business document in record time using nothing but a touchscreen display interface and virtual keyboard.
