PCs Are Adopting Features from Tablets Like iPad

New reports show the tablet category booming, Apple dominating, and enterprises adopting. But that's not all. Feature by feature, tablets and other mobile devices are beginning to influence the direction of personal computers.
A report released Thursday from ABI Research showed that, to no one's surprise, Apple's category-defining iPad had 85 percent of the market for tablets in 2010. ABI said Samsung's Galaxy Tab was a "distant second" in market share at about eight percent, and ARCHOS' Internet Tablet just barely registered at two percent.
'Evolution of Computers'
As the tablet category grows, enterprises are getting aboard. Earlier this month, Strategy Analytics issued a study that found 61 percent of U.S. corporations reporting tablet use by employees. The study, Are Tablets Set for Enterprise Primetime?, found that the growth of bring-your-own-device work policies, the availability of high-speed networks, and the shift to virtualized and cloud -computing environments are catalysts promoting the use of tablets in enterprises.
And the future for the category couldn't be brighter. ABI projects that 40 million to 50 million tablets will be sold worldwide this year. The report also throws cold water on a persistent theme, that tablets are cannibalizing laptop and PC sales -- at least through the end of 2010. "The hype that media tablets were displacing portable computers" and dedicated consumer electronics devices, the report states, "simply didn't become a reality."
But if tablets aren't cannibalizing computers, they are changing them. App stores, near-instant on, and solid-state storage are among the features that are increasingly being shared by both platforms. Avi Greengart, an analyst with industry research firm Current Analysis, noted that some of these advances can be seen as simply part "of the evolution of computers," although he allowed that app stores are an "offshoot of the smartphone world" -- which, arguably, begat tablets.
'Personality of Apps'
Greengart said PCs are again innovating after a period of relative stasis, with that innovation "being driven by smartphones and tablets."
Apple's next major version of Mac OS X, called Lion, is expected to display programs as if they were apps, and Microsoft has said Windows 8 will adopt tablet-like concepts. Greengart said an even better example of the influence of tablets and mobile devices is Hewlett-Packard's use of its webOS platform on PCs as well as on smartphones and tablets.
Al Hilwa, program director for application development at IDC, said the current trend of tablets influencing PCs is "all about making sure that apps' personalities work on PCs as well as on mobile devices."
To do that, he said, "touch, mobility and sensors have to be injected into PCs." Hilwa noted that tablets and other mobile devices have created a new sense of what an application contains, including knowledge about what sensors such as GPS or cameras are indicating, and "making touch into a first-class interface."

Comparing Apple Ipads

About a year ago Apple launched iPad, it changed the dynamics of tablets market ousting every available option. It was a real step in the future, amazing the ordinary, fascinating the geeks and pleasing the critics. The 9.7 inches capacitive touch screen added a new dimension to tablets as Apple grabbed lion’s share in the market.
Now a year has passed, standards and expectations are higher as the Apple iPad 2 has just hit the stores and is available for pre-order, many people (including me) were doubting the potential of Apple to come with something exciting enough to stir the interest as it gathered in case of iPad keeping in view the fact that charismatic Steve Jobs is out of the picture for the time being.
The release of next generation iPad 2 has been marked by long queues of fans waiting to get their hands on the device as soon as it’s released & stock being finished in warehouses and shops. The first day sales of iPad 2 are estimated to be between 400,000 to 500,000 devices which is a massive boost for Apple as around 200,000 devices iPads were sold on the first launch.
The iPad2 is priced similarly to the original iPad with better specifications, lesser weight and a thinner device with improved aesthetics. It’s smaller than the previous version and is lighter than iPhone 4. It is 241mm tall, 186mm wide and 8.6mm thick & is pretty easy to grasp due to curved edges. The new iPad has the same resolution as the previous one hence no improvement can be seen in viewing high definition pictures.

Weighing 680 grams, the iPad 2 is 80 grams lighter than its predecessor hence making it easier to carry along. When in hand, its weight seems surprisingly lesser and the silver metal at the back appears to be made of plastic. The original device seemed like a paper-weight due to its design, but this one is designed beautifully, you will appreciate the design more if you have used tablets of different brands.
Apple claims iPad 2 to be twice as fast as the previous version because its powered by dual core 1GHz A5 CPU built by ARM, space available for apps has also been doubled from 256 MB to 512 MB. As a result of the hardware upgrades, movies run visibly smoother in iPad2 but there is no clear difference in many apps like browser. A front camera is another addition which sets the new version apart fro the previous one, but the meager VGA resolution is not reasonable.
Some issues (light leak, yellowing) are being reported but the real worth of Apple iPad 2 will be known as time passes by and different classes of users put the device to different uses.

Logitech Teams Up With ZAGG To Come Up With The New iPad 2 Keyboard Case

A collaboration by Logitech and ZAGG has resulted in the impending launch of the new iPad 2 Keyboard Case that will convert the tablet into a network with a bluetooth keyboard on the side. This is fantastic news for anyone who prefers typing on a separate keyboard rather than on the virtual one on the iPad 2's screen.
If you've previously owned or heard about the ZAGGmate then this one is basically a re-branded version of it. Like its predecessor, the new case has a dual purpose and can be used as a protective case to stow away your iPad 2 when you're not using it. Likewise, it converts quickly to hold your iPad 2 upright vertically or horizontally while you type away on its embedded keyboard that conneThe iPad 2 Keyboard Case weighs 12.8 ounces and is installed with a 510 mAh battery that is good for approximately "several weeks" of normal use without charging. The device is set with a $100 price tag and will be made available sometime in April.cts to the tablet via Bluetooth.

iPad 2 Ultimate SleeveCase review

The thing about WaterField Designs is that they make the kind of bags you want to buy before you buy the devices to put in them. They’re sharp looking, they’re well-constructed, and they always do exactly what they claim to do. They also come in numerous designs for numerous devices. In this particular instance, I’m going to look at the Ultimat
I should discuss the options first, since you’ll immediately face those choices when you visit the sfbags.com website. The Ultimate SleeveCase is designed to comfortably fit the iPad, iPad 2 or iPad 2 with Smart Cover. Know which one you’re going to need, because the fit won’t be as good if you get the wrong one.
You can then select the trim (leather or indium, which I’ll discuss in a bit), the orientation (horizontal or vertical, of course) and your accessories. Orientation will determine whether the case opens on the thinner or wider edge, as well as where the D-rings for a strap will be placed. D-rings are $5 additional, and the strap comes in a standard version for $12 or a suspension strap for $22 (and yes, if you buy a strip, the D-rings are attached for free).
And finally, you can also add a piggyback mini pouch in leather trim for $27 or indium for $25. This pouch attaches to the D-rings to store additional items, such as a docking cable and power adaptere SleeveCase for iPad 2.

There are 12 variations of the iPad 2 coming to the UK and each will be priced as follows:
iPad 16GB WiFi (black/white) – £399 inc VAT
iPad 32GB WiFi (black/white) – £479 inc VAT

The WiFi+3G models add £100 to each price which makes them:

iPad 32GB WiFi + 3G (black/white) – £579 inc VAT
iPad 64GB WiFi + 3G (black/white) – £659 inc VAT
As mentioned in the news earlier today, the iPad 2 will be available to pre-order online at 1am local time with Apple stores beginning to sell them at 5PM. It is unclear why pre-orders wont get you an iPad 2 on launch date, or why the stores will not allow sales till 5PM, we guess it’s just the “Apple way”. Either way, expect them to sell quick. Within hours of the iPad 2 going on sale in the US, shipping times went from just a few days to a few weeks. If you want an iPad 2 at launch, get in line ASAP, or pre-order at 1am Friday morning

Subsidised iPad 2 Coming to T-Mobile UK – £199

iPad 2 shipping 300x244 Subsidised iPad 2 Coming to T Mobile UK £199Tomorrow is March 25, which also means that the iPad 2 will be going on sale at Apple stores in the UK. We now hear that T-Mobile will also be selling the iPad 2, on contract, for £199.
There are two prices for the iPad 2 on T-Mobile with the first being £199 and available to existing customers and the second is £229 for new customers. The only model available is the 3G 16GB with the 32GB and 64GB models not being sold through T-Mobile.
The contract will lock you in for 2 years and for monthly costs, expect to pay £25/month if you are an existing customer or £27 if you are a new customer to T-Mobile.
Data allowances are fairly generous at 1GB per month with an extra 1GB thrown in for those who use it between 12am and 10am each day… the quiet time.

iPad 2 UK Shipping Begins in 2 to 3 Weeks

iPad 2 3G 300x186 iPad 2 UK Shipping Begins in 2 to 3 WeeksFor those wanting to keep away from the iPad 2 queues tomorrow afternoon, it seems you’ll have an even longer wait than expected as the expected shipping time for the iPad 2 went online with in the last hour and the moment they went online, the dispatch time was 2 to 3 weeks.
Out of the 12 variations of the iPad 2 that are available, all of them have a shipping date of 2 to 3 weeks. Good news is that you can order now though and every model, black/white, 3G/WiFi only and all three capacities of each, is available to pre-order, but you’ll need to wait to get it.
It isn’t clear why Apple opted to open pre-orders on the early hours of the 25th other than trying to get more people in to stores, or perhaps due to known shortages of the new tablet device.

If you are waiting a bit longer to see if Apple decrease the waiting time, I wouldn’t hold back as NZ went online earlier today, due to the time difference, and already jumped up to 3 to 4 weeks. So if you insist on ordering online, you might as well do it now if you can’t wait.
Let us know how you get on in the comments and if you decided to go in-store.

Microsoft “Where’s my phone update?” Info for WP7 Launched

Windows Phone 7 update Microsoft Wheres my phone update? Info for WP7 LaunchedYesterday, Microsoft started rolling out the latest Windows Phone 7 update… the one that brings copy/paste to the relatively new smartphone platform. The problem is, is that not all people are receiving the update just yet. Yesterday we heard that those unlocked devices, ie, not sold from a carrier, are getting the updates right now. But, those buying through a carrier such as Orange in the UK were told they had to wait longer.
The “Where’s my phone update?” website has been launched so that users can know within 10 days or so, when the next WP7 update will be launching on their new smartphone
We periodically release software updates that add new features to your phone or improve its performance. When an update is available, a message appears on your phone letting you know. But we understand that it’s hard to wait, and that many of you want a better sense of when to expect your update.

When visiting the new Microsoft page , you’ll now be able to select your location and get details of when your device will be updated. No specific dates are mentioned, but what you do see is three stages which are Testing, Scheduling and Delivering Update. The testing phase is the most unclear of the options with no indication of how long that period will last. When a network reaches the Scheduling phase, expect the update to arrive within 10 days or less. Delivering means that you should get, or have already received, a notification of the update arriving.windows phone 7 updates 650x420 Microsoft Wheres my phone update? Info for WP7 Launched
