Get “Bizzy” – Real Time Reviews and Suggestions

Bizzy, the personalized local business recommendation engine powered by people with similar tastes, launched a new mobile location-based “Check Out” feature, which lets you quickly and easily denote your response to every business you visit. Then the sentiment that you have shared about the business that you visited will let others know what you thought about the place and it will help Bizzy give YOU recommendations for the next time you’re out and about.
“Bizzy’s new ‘Check Out’ is very different than other location apps that focus on WHERE you went. Bizzy’s focus is on how you liked where you went,” says Aaron Strout, author of the upcoming book “Location-Based Services for Dummies.” “I’ll keep checking in with Foursquare or Gowalla when I go out, but I’m also going to ‘Check Out’ with Bizzy to keep a record of my favorite places, let my friends know how it went, and help Bizzy learn more about my tastes.”
“We’ve designed ‘Check Outs’ to let users share their opinion of a place in the same amount of time it takes to sign a credit card slip or wait for your date to get back from the bathroom. You don’t have to wait to get home to write up a review anymore.”
To “Check Out” from a business, you just tap on the “Check Out” button on the Bizzy mobile app and then tell Bizzy how you liked the place by using the smiley face scale: the “happy face :) ,” the “meh face :| ,” or the “sad face :( .” you can also leave a tip with your “Check Out,” letting future visitors know a little something extra about the location, or food, or other special insider information including some pictures if you’d like.
So download the Bizzy mobile app for iPhone or Android smartphones and start “checking out” then you can let Bizzy recommend the best places for you to eat, shop and play. Did I mention it’s free? but right now it’s only here in the U.S.A.

Unconfirmed: Toshiba’s next Android tablet will be called ANT

Toshiba ANT on Newegg
At CES 2011, Toshiba had on display an Android tablet that would be released sometime in the near future.  Considering April is four months since January, it makes sense Toshiba would begin to get the ball rolling with their latest Android 3.0 tablet featuring a Tegra 2 Dual Core 1GHz processor.
According to a recent product listings on Newegg, Toshiba’s Android 3.0 tablet will be called the ANT and the three models are named ANT-100, ANT-102, and ANT-104.  The only differences among each model is the amount of storage space.  The ANT-100 contains a 10.1 inch touch screen, Android 3.0, 2MP front facing camera, 5MP rear facing camera, and 8GB of onboard memory.  The ANT-102’s only difference is that it has 16GB of memory.  Lastly, the ANT-104 contains 32GB of memory.  In terms of pricing, the ANT-100 costs $449, the ANT-102 costs $499, and the ANT-104 costs $579.  Since Toshiba has yet to officially announce the ANT Android tablet, we’re assuming Newegg jumped the gun with the product listings and pricing and name of the device are all (hopefully, just the name) subject to change.

Sony Ericsson Android App Channel Goes Live

Sony Ericsson, today, announced an exclusive Android App channel in the Market that will allow users to download apps created by Sony or its partners.  Many signature Sony apps are available such as Timescape plug-ins, LiveView Apps.  There will also be some exclusive game content, according to Sony.  The new channel will be pushed out on a by-carrier basis, but if you have a Sony Ericsson phone chances are you’ll be seeing this new channel before other people.
Sony’s Xperia line of phones, most notably the Xperia Play, have their own app store where users can download PlayStation style games.  The new channel is a good idea though, as its much easier than developing a whole new app store for users to find and download.  It still offers developers a place to showcase their apps, and should be a good place to find more games to use with your Xperia play.  The new channel will also be a boon for LiveView, as it will offer a better place to find apps for the watch accessory.  It remains to be seen, now, whether other companies will follow suit and start up their own app channels to put their offerings up on the Market.

The first great Android Tablet: Nook Color

Let’s get real. There are only two great tablets out there today: Apple’s iPad and the iPad 2. Android has always had the potential to be a wonderful tablet operating system, but most Android tablets have been non-starters and, even the best of them, the Samsung Galaxy Tab aren’t as good as an iPad. But, the iPad may soon have a serious Android opponent: Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color.
I know what you’re thinking: The Nook Color!? It’s an e-reader, sure you can root the Nook Color into being a full scale Android tablet, but you don’t want to hack my e-reader and void my warranty just to get a cheap tablet that might, or might not, work.
Who said anything about rooting it? While rooting a Nook Color is quite easy–watch huskermania’s YouTube video on how to do it if you don’t believe me–Barnes & Noble will be upgrading the Color Nook to being a real Android tablet in mid-April. In its press release, the book store giant states only that, “NOOK Color will get even better this Spring when a major update to the device’s firmware will offer customers access to explore exciting new applications, e-mail and many other requested features.” Sources tell me though that the Color Nook will be upgraded from Android 2.1 to Android 2.2 (Froyo), be given Flash video support, and will have its own version of the Google Android Apps Market.
As reported by ZDNet’s sister network, CNET, the Home Shopping Network, of all places, has been advertising the Color Nook’s forthcoming firmware upgrade. This news comes as no surprise. I’ve been predicting that it was only a matter of time before the Android Linux-based e-readers, like the Nook and Android’s Kindle, were upgraded into tablets.
Now you may be thinking, sure the Nook Color is nice, but how can it compete with an iPad? It only has a 7″ display, 8GBs of internal storage, a micro-SD card slot for up to 32GBs of additional storage, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, and an 800MHz ARM Cortex A8-processor. You’re right, that’s smaller and slower than an iPad and a good deal slower than an iPad 2.
So what? Here’s the important point: You can pick up a new Nook Color for $249. The cheapest new iPad2? $499.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, Apple is the Mercedes-Benz, the Rolls-Royce, of computing hardware. That’s fine, but it still leaves lots of room for the mid and low-end market users and now, with this update to the Nook Color coming down the road we’re finally going to have a compelling, inexpensive Android tablet for the Toyota or Ford “drivers

Toshiba Reveals Possible Fan-favorite 10.1" Android Tablet

Toshiba is now getting into the game with their own Android tablet. The new tablet has only a few published stats, leaked from Amazon but what little we know about it is exciting. This should be a tablet tweaked version of Android called Honeycomb armed with the Tegra 2 processor from Nvidia. The iPad and the updated Galaxy Tab 2 are almost more known for what they have left out than what they bear not so for Toshiba's entrant. Even the Xoom missed the mark in a few areas.
Toshiba brings the features that seem obvious and so shockingly absent from the other guys. A full sized USB port is open for accessory and storage options. Memory expansion is further possible with a full sized SDXC card slot. This is a great boon for those already vested in SD cards or devices that use them. Your tablet can now become a slick workstation for digital photography. Upload and review your photos on the large 10.1 screen on the go. You can see them even larger on projectors or HDTVs employing the full size HDMI connector.
There's also a mini-USB port for connection, sync and transfers (and possibly charging). While the mini-USB plug is still viable and very convenient, it does go slightly against the grain of the standardization around micro-USB. The Toshiba tablet also has a replaceable battery, hopefully with external charging options. Toshiba's choices to include the features that should have been standard on day one, should have people flocking to this tablet on it's launch day. As long as the price is remotely reasonable this is probably the most user friendly multi-role tablet announced. The only 3 things it's lacking are a decent nickname, a release date and a reasonable price tag. With any luck there will be more than one US cellular carrier left by the time of its release and not just AT&T&T.

Wide Range of Ecosystem Partners Demonstrate Products and Solutions that Take Advantage of the 4G LTE Network
LAS VEGAS and BASKING RIDGE, N.J. – Verizon Wireless said today that its first-ever exhibit booth at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) will show off the consumer and enterprise capabilities of its new 4G LTE network with the products, services and solutions that take advantage of the blazingly fast speed and low latency of the new wireless network. On Jan. 6, the company will also offer a sneak peek at a suite of Android-based LTE consumer devices at a news conference.
Visitors to the exhibit booth (Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall, #35216) will see firsthand how the nation’s fastest 4G LTE network can fundamentally change how consumers manage their daily lives and how businesses interact with each other and with their customers.
Working with nearly 50 different technology ecosystem partners, the Verizon Wireless booth will highlight more than 40 new solutions that take advantage of the fast speeds and low latency of the new 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network. Demonstrations will range from connected home and cars to gaming and entertainment to consumer devices. The demos will also feature new ways to do mobile collaboration for retail, customer service and other industries; home and energy management; and consumer entertainment, including multiplayer gaming, all of which leverage the 4G network in innovative ways. Verizon Wireless and its partners will also feature remote security and health care options and a car that shows different applications coming from the automotive industry.
Many of the solutions being highlighted are the result of collaborations fostered at Verizon Wireless’ LTE Innovation Center. The LTE Innovation Center, established in 2008 and located in Waltham, Mass., provides an environment for dozens of diverse companies to work collaboratively to develop innovative products and solutions that leverage 4G LTE technology.

Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network currently reaches one-third of all Americans, with plans to expand the network to the company’s entire 3G coverage area over the next three years.

In 2015: Android first, Windows Phone second, iPhone third

Smartphone vendors will ship more than 450 million smartphones in 2011 compared to the 303.4 million units shipped in 2010. Furthermore, the smartphone market will grow more than four times faster than the overall mobile phone market: 49.2 percent in 2011 as more consumers and enterprise users turn in their feature phones for smartphones, according to International Data Corporation

Last year, Android took second place in 2010. This year, it will take the crown (which is not too shocking) and will steadily continue to grow share into 2015. Vendors who bet on Android as the mobile OS that would push their smartphone strategies saw great results last year, but the next few years look even more promising.
What may be a bit more surprising is the expectations IDC has for the Nokia-Microsoft deal. Up until the launch of Windows Phone 7 last year, Microsoft has steadily lost market share. The new alliance, however, will result in Windows Phone taking second place by 2015. Meanwhile, as Symbian is phased out, it will quickly fall into last place.
Where does that leave the rest of the market in 2015? IDC believes iOS will be in third and BlackBerry will be in fourth. It does not even mention HP’s webOS.
“Overall market growth in 2010 was exceptional,” said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. “Last year’s high market growth was due in part to pent-up demand from a challenging 2009, when many buyers held off on mobile phone purchases. The expected market growth for 2011, while still notable, will taper off somewhat from what we saw in 2010.

Google’s Android OS accused of stealing Linux code

Thought the Google/Oracle (Java) debacle was bad news for Android? Well, this time around, Google has been accused of stealing 2.5 megabytes (MB) of Linux code for their Android OS mobile operating system, which is likely much more serious than the Java allegations.

Florian Mueller, the man accusing Google of stealing the Linux kernel header file, says that the only way the search giant can address the issue without the collapse of the Android ecosystem is to replace the stolen code. An alternative library could be used to replace the code; the industry standard, GNU C Library, which is used in other Linux mobile operating systems, like MeeGo and WebOS.

Replacing the existing code with a new library would require Google to rewrite a large chunk of the operating system, which would take a long time to accomplish. Furthermore, there would be a good number of compatibility issues. The only alternative to switching to another library and rewriting a large portion of the code is to take the code and put it under the GPL, but that would mean that any part of the OS, or third-party application, would be able to be freely modified by anyone. If that happens, generating revenue would be impossible for developers using the “stolen” code.

Mueller goes on and on. And on. But without getting bored to tears, it’s easy to see that this could end up being one huge mess for Google. If it’s proven that there was code stolen for Android, Google would need to come up with an elegant, fast solution. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be one. The consequences are ugly, and while it may not spell the end of Android, it could potentially alter it significantly, and not for the better.

Whatever comes of this, Google best have a plan if it intends to retain or extend its mobile OS dominance.

More mobile spyware hits Android

NetQin Mobile has captured 2 new spyware programs that have been infecting Android phones. The two programs, "SW.SecurePhone" and "SW.Qieting", can release an unsettling amount of personal information from an infected phone.

SW.SecurePhone is an app that has no icon and runs continuously in the background. The app gathers data from your text messages, call log, and pictures, and uploads them to a remote server. SW.SecurePhone can also obtain your phone's location information and record sounds around the device.

SW.Qieting forwards your incoming messages to a monitoring phone.

[ With the increasing threat of cyber crimes, protect yourself and stay informed on the latest news with Computerworld's Security newsletter ]
Both are mainly distributed in the U.S through the internet. Since neither of the two apps have an icon, it's hard to tell at a glance whether you are infected or not. To help users stay safe, NetQin offers the following advice:

1) Download applications from trusted sources and check reviews, ratings, and developer information before downloading anything.

2) Pay close attention to app permissions. An application should not request to do more than what it offers in its official list of features.

3) Be on alert for unusual fees in your phone bill as this may be a sign your phone is infected.

4) Install a trusted security application to protect your phone.

As Android gains in popularity, more and more malware makers will begin to target the platform. So if you have an Android phone, it may be worth your while to get an antivirus program on it. Better to be safe than sorry.

Android Overtakes BlackBerry As the Top U.S. Smartphone Platform [REPORT]

The trend was obvious for quite some time, and now it finally happened: Android is the most popular smartphone platform among U.S. subscribers.According to comScore’s data, Google’s Android rose from 23.5% market share in October 2010 to 31.2% in January 2011, enough to securely grab first place from RIM’s BlackBerry, which fell 35.8% in October 2010 to 30.4% in January 2011. A recent report from Nielsen also claimed that Android is now the number one smartphone platform in the U.S., albeit with slightly different numbers.
Apple’s iOS experienced a minute growth in the same period: from 24.6% to 24.7%, while Microsoft and Palm continued losing market share, ending at 8.0% and 3.2%, respectively.

Recent data from Canalys showed that Android is also the world’s most popular smartphone platform, and with the onslaught of Android smartphones this year, we’re sure that Android will continue doing well throughout 2011
